Date Rape is the term applied to forced sex between two people who are already acquainted. When the victim of Date rape is drugged by her attacker, it is referred to by experts as "Drug-facilitated sexual assault." "Date Rape Drugs" are often used to help the violator sedate the victim, making sexual assault easier. The three most commonly used date rape drugs are GHB (gamma hydroxybutyric acid) Rohypnol (flunitrazepam)and Ketamine (ketamine hydrochloride.) These drugs can be either a liquid, a powder, or a pill and are usually odorless, tasteless, and have no color making them undetectable if placed in an unkowing victims drink without their knowledge.[1]

Side Effects

GHB has the most dangerous possible side effects including, relaxation, drowsiness, dizziness, nausea, problems seeing, unconsciousness (black out,) seizures, can't remember what happened while drugged, problems breathing, tremors, sweating, vomiting, slow heart rate, dream-like feeling, coma, or death.

Rohypnol is still dangerous but not as severe, it has many similar side effects to GHB. The possible side Effects of Rohypnol are can't remember what happened while drugged, lower blood pressure, sleepiness, muscle relaxation or loss of muscle control, drunk feeling, nausea, problems talking, difficulty with motor movements, loss of consciousness, confusion, problems seeing, dizziness, confusion, or stomach problems.

The third drug, Ketamine has some very different effects then the other two drugs and is often used as a recreational drug. Ketamine can cause hallucinations, lost sense of time and identity, distorted perceptions of sight and sound, feeling out of control, impaired motor function, problems breathing, convulsions, vomiting, out of body experiences, memory problems, dream-like feeling, numbness, loss of coordination, aggressive or violent behavior, or slurred speech.(1)

Alcohol and Date Rape

Unfortunately, one of the most dangerous date rape drugs is alcohol. Many people do not realize what a great risk they are putting themselves at when they consume alcohol. Not only does drinking impair ones judgment, making it more likely for one to put ones self in a dangerous situation without knowing, but it also weakens a persons ability to fight back against physical or sexual assault. Because drinking too much can also cause blackouts and memory loss, it is just as dangerous as Ketamine, Rohypnol, and GHB. (1)

Prevention

The easiest way to prevent ones self from being drugged is to make sure that one never accepts a drink from someone else and to make sure one opens every drink for him or herself. Make sure that whether one is at a small gathering, a large party, a bar, or on a date that one keeps their eyes on their drinks at all times, even when using the restroom. This is a very effective way to ensure ones safety because date rape drugs are usually placed undetectably in drinks. One must also be aware of how much alcohol one consumes and always stay alert. Sometimes GHB can taste salty, therefore if ones drink ever tastes at all strange, one should not drink it. It is also important that one never drinks out of a large common container (such as a punch bowl) or shares drinks with others. An extra precaution is to keep a non-drinking friend around ones self at all times.(1)
